Ali's Exchange to City University | Hong Kong

Going on exchange in Hong Kong was one of the greatest things I have done in my life and I will never forget the amazing experience I was lucky enough to have there.

It was my first time living away from home and being alone in a huge city was a little bit scary but so exciting. Being alone for the first few days I was there allowed me to really understand who I was as a person, just being in a place that is completely new to you without all the things you usually have makes you realise who you really are, this was the first of many life changing things that would happen to me in Hong Kong.

I am a pretty alternative guy and wanted to find people who shared similar interests as me. This became a bit of an issue at the beginning when meeting people from all over the world who were all very different from the people I usually hang out with at home at my host University. I did find friends however and after going to music events that I was interested in, I quickly began to find great friends from both inside and outside my host university. The feeling of being different to most people did start to get to me but It was all a learning experience as I now know that the people are out there you just have to go and find them!

The hardest part of exchange was having my Grandmother who had raised me like a mother passed away whilst I was in the middle of my semester. This was devastating and I immediately wanted to go home and leave my exchange program. However after having a really good think about things and putting it all in perspective I decided to go home for a week then return to Hong Kong to finish my studies. It was a really tough time for me but it taught me that horrible things happen to us in life but we have to push through it and do what we need to do.

Hong Kong was one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. I feel so lucky that I had the opportunity to visit many temples and historical places as well as go hiking and just in general being able to explore so many unknown places to me. I may have had feelings of wanting to go home whilst I was in Hong Kong but now that I am back home all I want to do is go back!

Going on exchange changed my life for the better and I would recommend it to anyone who was interested.
