Chloe's Exchange to Lund University | Sweden
I was on exchange in Lund, Sweden for one year and I know it will always be one of the defining experiences in my life. I made the best friends, and had the chance to encounter a whole new language, culture, and way of life.
I had always wanted to study abroad but I didn’t know if I could make it fit my degree and the double major requirements I had to complete, but my academic chairs were so helpful and really encouraged me to go. Biting the bullet and just applying on a whim was the best decision I ever made, and I loved it so much that I even extended my stay another semester!
When I went I had no Swedish, didn’t know a single person and had never lived out of home before. Yet after a few short months I was fully independent, had friends in every country in Europe and was conversationally fluent in Swedish. I got to experience cold Christmas and 24-hour sunshine, take classes in buildings older than Australia, attend a leadership program in the US on my way there, and most importantly discovered a whole new way of learning, interacting, and understanding people.
Study abroad made me a better student and a better person, opening my mind to how big, diverse and exciting the world is. I think that everyone should take at least one semester or short course exchange, knowing that even when it feels like a big leap of faith, the benefits far outweigh that tiny moment of stepping outside your comfort zone. There’s so much support financially, emotionally and all the way through applying and going that you shouldn’t wait another second before dreaming of where you're going to go.
