Brenton's Exchange to University of Dundee | Scotland
I loved going on exchange and completing such an experience truly does change you. You are living in such a multicultural environment and I loved being surrounded by so many warm, welcoming and friendly people. To those who are worried about making new friends don’t as the best part is your all in the same boat, your all in a completely foreign country and most of your fellow exchange students will know no one else.
I went for a year and while many students left after a semester, there are a few who like you also stay and it is just another opportunity to meet more incredible people in the new term. The best bet is that to study abroad most people will be open minded and quite adventurous and weekend trips to neighboring countries is quite often a constant especially if you choose to study in Europe. Some of my best memories of my exchange were exploring Ireland, Iceland and Morocco with my mates, they came from far and wide, the United States, Brazil, Canada, Germany, France and Australia were just some of the countries which we represented but with cheap Ryanair and easyJet flights who could resist. With so many students from various parts of the world there always an excuse to through a party we celebrated Australia Day, we celebrated the 4th July, we celebrated Kings Day, any excuse would do.
There are many ways upon reflection that exchange has impacted on me. The most important and probably the first is the making of lifelong friends from all parts of the world, I plan on visiting and know that if I ever need a hand or wish to move overseas that they would be there to help. I keep in contact over Skype and Facebook, there’s also of course the added benefit of having a free place to crash in various cities. The second is my career goals, as someone who is internationally focused me wish to practice overseas and studying another country’s legal system demonstrates a clear interest in this goal and this something which is asked about by future employers.
The academics aside most employers will ask anyway as students who have completed exchange have a certain set of personal attributes that are desirable in any workplace. Lastly exchange has assisted in my personal growth as having the opportunity to travel to an area where I am the only Australian; there is a kind of self-imposed obligation on you to make the best impression possible. It gives you a greater awareness of your own national identity and not only does living in has a foreign country made it clear to everyone that you are finally domesticated and self-sufficient it also widens your perspective and views on the world around you. You will never see things the same way again.
