Shane's Exchange to University of Limerick | Ireland

Going on exchange and living in another country, where you know nobody, was definitely a daunting prospect for me at first. I had previously travelled Europe with friends and it was a desire of mine to return when I could, but the option of going on exchange was something entirely different. Now when I look back I am so glad that I decided to do it because it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

At first I was a bit lost and a little lonely but then came orientation and meeting all the like-minded people from all over Europe. From that moment on I knew I was going to have an amazing time here. After that I met my Irish roommates, who I became good mates with from the very first night together, and then the people in my classes. From all of these people I had a great network to ask questions and find out anything I needed about the university or around Limerick. Also being an international student there is plenty on offer from both Murdoch and your host university to help you get settled and fit in as easily as possible.

I found the best parts of going on exchange was being an international student, once you start talking people are automatically intrigued by you and ask you loads of questions. You get contacts from all over the world, which is incredibly handy when you are going somewhere new to travel.  These lifelong friends are something I will always cherish, my Irish roommates I would consider some of my best mates now and keep in regular contact with.  Also being in Europe I was a short flight away from so many countries that a weekend trip to England was a mere 45-minute flight away. Or you can do what I did after my semester, as they finish earlier than us, and travel before the next semester starts.

When I tell people about my time away and how much I loved it I always get the same response, “Oh I would love to do something like that”, don’t be one of these people. If I have one bit of advice for anyone considering going on exchange is don’t think about it just do it, see and explore wherever you go and grab every chance you can because no matter where you go you wont regret it.
