Andrew's Exchange to University of Turku | Finland
Going on exchange was a highly scary but exciting time for me as I’d been in Australia as long as I could remember and had never left the country before. I didn’t know what to expect so I went under the adage of ‘expect the unexpected’.
It was hands down the best experience of my life. In hindsight, I could’ve made more of it and embraced the difficulties I experienced over there, such as the culture, weather and living alone, but you bring back far more life skills, memories and personality traits than you leave Australia with.
I travelled to 12 countries across Europe, doing the typical Aussie backpacker thing along the way and made memories and friends that will last a lifetime. I saw things I would never see in Australia and was determined to make every second count, which I did. I intend to live overseas again and travel extensively after graduation from Murdoch; the world is too beautiful to stay Down Under forever.
Settling back into life in Australia was difficult, particularly as I’d just had the best 5 months of my life and yet I was expected to just carry on my normal routine upon returning home; it was immensely difficult to do and I struggled. But by keeping in contact with the friends you make abroad, who are spread out all over the world and have some amazing stories to tell, you gain a greater appreciation of the world and become a better-rounded global citizen.
Without a doubt, do it. You will gain so much out of it. I can’t express how much it changed my life, I’m a completely different person than I was before I left. Would do it again in a heartbeat if I could.
