Anna's Exchange to Nottingham Trent University | England

If you’re someone like me who lives with parents, going out of your comfort zone, and living independently in a place you’ve never been before is truly life changing. My time abroad has taught me so much about myself, and has made me into a stronger person through the many experiences. Now, let me tell you a bit about what I got up to during my time

The university I chose to study at was Nottingham Trent University, in Nottingham, United Kingdom. I lived at a university hall, which was really good as all my classes were a few minutes walk away (more sleep for me!). The supermarkets, shopping centre, and the city centre were all easily a ten minute walk away too, which made things really easy. If you’re scared about being in a whole new place by yourself and adjusting to everything, don’t be!

Although I had my own room and bathroom, which was lovely, I shared a large kitchen with others living in my hall, which was a really good way to meet others who were in the same boat as you. I’ve made amazing friends from all over the world such as Greece, Germany, Netherlands, Poland and Taiwan! We explored what the town had to offer such as town events like the Goose Fair (the Royal show but bigger and better! Can you believe it’s been going on for more than 700 years?!), fun international student parties (their pub crawls are only $15 and you get FOUR free drinks and entry to three bars and a club!), as well as weekend trips away to cities in England. Also, did I mention that Robin Hood was situated in Nottingham? And Wollaton Hall was used for a scene in the Batman movie! It was cool to see that even a small city has so much history and culture behind it.

Studying in a different place is definitely an experience in itself. Because you’re so used to going to the same university and its format, you just get the “newbie” feels again. Mostly everyone in the class was British, so everyone was interested that I was from Australia. I found classes to be more engaging than at Murdoch, which was quite different. Tutors were very helpful, which I found really reassuring.

Studies aside, I had a lot of time to travel to other places in Europe as we had a four week Christmas break. I travelled to London, Copenhagen, Prague and Budapest. And after finishing assessments, before I went back to little ol’ Perth, I squeezed in more places in Europe such as Venice, Rome, Barcelona, and more!

Rest assured, there are always cheap flights available (I went to Milan and back for only $40!). As long as you budget wisely, you will be fine! Studying abroad for a semester was truly the best experience of my life and I strongly suggest anyone to apply. You’ll be in for an unforgettable and the most adventurous semester!
