My name is Daniel Nagatani, I’m in my third year of a Bachelor of Law and Economics and I was given the amazing opportunity to participate in the Study Abroad program last year. I was lucky enough to get into Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, Canada.
I had my reservations about the program - going to another country by myself, not knowing anyone or anything about the place, but honestly, it was the best decision I’ve ever made to go.
There are so many great reasons to go on exchange, and the Murdoch Mobility team is so accommodating and helpful, you will always have support when you need it. The university and visa application process could have been so much more intimidating and somewhat overwhelming without them. Once I got to Vancouver, everyone was so friendly and it was easy to feel at home.
For those worried about how exchange might impact their course, I think it only did good things for me. Going to another university means you get to choose from a range of units that Murdoch might not offer. I made the most of this opportunity and took a course called Macroeconomics of Canada and gained a unique insight into the Canadian economy that I wouldn’t have otherwise learnt about in Australia. The bonus is that these credits count towards your degree at home so you don’t lose any time.
When studying in a new country, you really go out and make the most of being a university student. You will meet other exchange students who are likeminded and equally keen to make the most out of the experience as you are, as well as locals who are always happy to show a foreigner around their country. When I didn’t have classes or exams I was out exploring Vancouver and travelling with the friends I’d made. I got to go snowboarding in Whistler and other mountains, took a ten hour road trip to Banff during the reading break, spent weekends away in Vancouver Island and a took a greyhound across the border to Portland and Seattle.
I saw some amazing things and went to insanely beautiful places but the best thing by far were the people I met and the friends I made. I lived on campus so I was constantly surrounded by great people. Ironically, my best mates were Aussies but they’ll definitely be lifelong friends. And one of the major perks of making friends on exchange is that you will have a couch to crash on in countries all around the world!
I have nothing but great things to say about the whole experience, I’d recommend it to anyone and everyone. You wont regret it!
