Harry's Exchange to University of Limerick | Ireland
Studying in another country was something I always wanted to do and although it may be a scary thought it is something I would recommend to any student going through university. Going to Ireland for a semester was one of the best experiences I have ever had. I made some lifelong friends and met people from all over the world who I will always be able to visit and stay with when I am travelling. Being in Ireland also allowed me to travel around Europe on weekends and during study weeks with my housemates. No matter what country you go to, it is the people you meet along the way that make it a life changing experience.
I was very lucky to end up in a house with 5 other international students who had an adventurous mindset like me and were always looking for a new experience. Our house was in Kilmurry Village about a 5 minute walk from the university. Orientation week gave me time to find my feet and get all the information I needed for the upcoming semester. It worked in my favour that I was the only Australian studying at the university that semester so no one ever forgot who I was. Once I had settled in and the semester had begun, I joined the international society who organised trips around Ireland each weekend for all the international students. In my first 3 weeks I visited Galway, Cork and the Cliffs of Moher. The scenery around Ireland was amazing and as always everything was so green due to the constant rain that I slowly got used to after 4 months.
Each Friday the university bar had an International night which was a lot of fun and allowed everyone to constantly meet new people. Different clubs and societies also had many social events going on throughout the semester which made it a very friendly and welcoming environment. Once I had seen a lot of the explored the scenery in Ireland I decided to use my free time to jet off around Europe. We had a week off for the Easter break giving my housemate and I the chance to travel to Berlin and Prague which was a lot of fun. Once we returned from that trip we only had a few days until we embraced the national day of Ireland, St Patrick’s Day. My housemates and I decided to catch the bus to Dublin for the day to celebrate and we woke up early to get the 7am bus and beat the traffic. It was an amazing experience with the national colours green, white and orange spread all over the city while the pubs were packed to the brim full of joyful Irish men and women dancing the night away.
As the semester progressed I began to travel more across weekends going to Amsterdam, Greece, Edinburgh, Belfast and Liverpool. I built close bonds with my travelling companions through experiences which we had together and will always cherish. Going on exchange was like nothing else you will ever experience. If you are not sure whether to take that big step and venture to the other side of the world on your own just remember, everyone else will be in the same boat as you when you arrive. Everyone is there to have a good time and meet new people, so show some initiative, put yourself out there and explore the globe while you study.
