Lisa's Exchange to Simon Fraser University | Canada
I can’t believe only a few weeks ago I was sitting in my room at Simon Fraser University wondering where the time went. 6 months away from home seemed so long to be away from friends and family, but in fact it went by in a heartbeat. I knew from the start it would be an awesome experience even though I had second thoughts, I never expect it to impact my life in the way that it has.
Over the six months that I spent at SFU in Vancouver, Canada I was very fortunate to be part of so many adventures. The exchange allows you to meet so many new people from all over the world with different perspectives and life paths.
The first four months I spent actually studying at SFU. Being on exchange makes it so much easier to focus on not only studying but also exploring your new environment because you are not allowed to work and also only need to pass all units. The one thing I was worried about when I first got there was whether or not I will fit in or even if I will find friends. SFU makes it so easier for you to make friends. If you live on rez they have a week of orientation activities these include trips to Lynn Canyon, water ball fights and daily meetings with your clan. If that wasn’t enough international student services also creates events for other exchange students such as going to see a hockey game.
Study is only part of the exchange. Vancouver has so many amazing things to do and it’s defiantly never boring. There’s Stanley park, Granville island, Whistler and of course Granville street (every time you go something new will happen on this street) to name only a few. There are also a few islands around Vancouver such as Victoria for a weekend trip away.
After an amazing six months and so many adventures it was time to say goodbye and leave my new home behind and head back to Australia. That was one of the hardest things that I had to do was just that… say goodbye. Going on exchange I didn’t expect to learn so much about myself and other people, as cliché as it sounds it’s honestly the best thing that I have
ever done. You learn to open up to people and just to be yourself as well as teaching you so many people skills. The only regret that I have is that I didn’t go for a year, so if you’re thinking about going on exchange don’t think just do it, it’s a once in a life time experience that you will never forget or regret!
