Most Common Asked Questions About Studying Abroad!

Where can I go on Exchange?
Murdoch University has over 50 partner universities in Europe, Asia and North America. You can find information about course restriction, GPA requirements, links for unit search and which units are taught in English here. If you're interested in course-specific suggestions please have a look at the course list (excel). We strongly recommend you do research on the units that are offered (in English if applicable) before you apply as these are suggestions only and does not mean the university is the right choice for you. It is your responsibility to ensure the units you choose are available and offered during the semester you intend to spend overseas.
If you are not sure how to narrow down your choices from our partners list, have a look at how to choose your host university (pdf).

How many units do I need to take?
The amount of units you need to study depend on the number of credit points you receive for each unit. In some cases you only study two units, in other cases you study six units. It is different from country to country and from university to university. You need to do the equivalent of 9 Murdoch credit points and the maximum of 12 Murdoch credit points. Can I study at a non-partner university?
We strongly recommend students to study at one of our partner universities but it is possible to study at a non-partner university. If you go on Exchange you do not have to pay tuition fees at your host university but only pay Murdoch University during the semester that you are away. If you choose to study outside the Exchange program you have to pay tuition fees at your host university and in places like the USA or the UK this can become very cost intensive. When you participate in the Exchange program, credit transfer is given. It still depends on the units you choose and how your Academic Chairs approves these units towards you degree. If you choose to study abroad at a non-partner university you will need the approval for your proposed units from your Academic Chair and contact the Fees and Enrolment Team through My Answers. You will be enrolled cross-institutional and you find the application form here. You also need to organise the stay abroad yourself.

Do I have to learn a second language?
No, you don't have to learn a second language to study in a non-English speaking country. All of our partner institutions offer units in English so you can study in exciting places like Finland, Denmark, Croatia, the Czech Republic or South Korea without learning the language. However if you choose to study in a non-English speaking country you can still learn a second language while you're abroad and not just come back with academic credit but also with a second language. Students that study in non-English speaking countries often take at least one language unit overseas.

How much does it cost to go on Exchange?
Going on Exchange is definitely affordable. These are some of the expenses you might have:
- Tuition fees: You only pay your usual Murdoch University course fee, there is no extra tuition fee at your host university. The only fee can be an administration fee, similar to SSAF.
- Living expenses: Remember that you don't have costs in Perth during your semester abroad so you already have this money to spend overseas on living expenses. However please note that you might spend more due to domestic travel during your time abroad.
- Insurance: You are automatically insured during your semester and a few days before and after through Murdoch University. This insurance is free of charge. You only need additional travel insurance if you like to travel before or after your semester.
- Accommodation: You can live on- or off-campus. Costs are usually slightly lower than in Perth but is of course depending on where you live.
- International flights and domestic travel: These are extra costs however there are some great deals around for students. Just do some research online and talk to travel agents. The closer it gets to the proposed flight date, the more expenses flights get.
- Visa: For some countries you need a visa, please check the consulates websites individually for prices.
Every semester we offer scholarships. OS-Help, a loan from the Australian Government, is also available if you meet the criteria. Please see our scholarships and costs website for financial support.

Can I go on Exchange in my last semester?
Yes, you can definitely go on Exchange if you only have one semester to complete your course. However we do recommend you going earlier in your degree for the following reasons:
- If you fail a class you will need to return to Australia to make up this class
- You must maintain a full-time Murdoch equivalent load whilst overseas (at least 9 credit points), even if you had only one class left, which will increase your HECS debt
- You won't be eligible for the OS-Help loan if you do not have at least 3 credit points left upon return to Australia
- We can't guarantee that the overseas university will forward your academic transcript on time for your to attend the next possible graduation ceremony. We need the Academic Transcript to organise your credit transfer. If the results don’t arrive in time your graduation maybe delayed because the Graduation Team needs results until a certain day.
