Jasmine's Internship Abroad in Hong Kong | Hong Kong

My name is Jasmine and I completed an internship abroad with AIC in Hong Kong at Marycove School between 15 January – 22 February 2019. At Murdoch University, I am studying a Bachelor of Science and Arts in Psychology.

The key factors for myself choosing to do an Internship Abroad were:

I saw an opportunity to work overseas in the Murdoch’s Study Abroad Facebook page and since I was going to Hong Kong anyway, I thought, “why not?”.

A little about my Internship Abroad...

I worked as an English mentor in Marycove School, an all-girls Catholic school.  Together with another intern, we were responsible for helping students their improve English skills.

For oral English, we instructed them to read their assessment’s instructions and if they find it difficult to pronounce, we verbalize it which they parrot back. We also organised a Word of the Day activity and asked them to come up with a sentence using the word; if they were successful in constructing a full sentence, they receive chocolates which really encouraged them!

For written English, we worked on their worksheets assigned by their English teacher. We guided them in writing complete sentence answers. We helped them spell words, too, by enunciating the letters exaggeratingly which we all found funny.

Other responsibilities included writing interactive worksheets based on movies and organizing lunch activities that are both fun and collaborating; such as charades, guessing games, dancing and singing.

The most valuable lesson I learnt from this experience: being a teacher is not easy!

The best part of my Internship Abroad was...

The best part of this internship was the activities I shared with the students and the teachers.

Every week, teachers organise social service activities on Mondays and Thursdays where we make arts and craft stuff for ourselves and the elderly. We started our intern a few weeks before the Chinese New Year so we did a lot of paper folding with the red packets and making lanterns! I love how creative it was. Our lunchtime activities allowed me to grow closer with the students: we laughed ourselves silly during the games or run around the basketball court.

I was also lucky to have a generous supervisor who invited us to numerous out-of-school activities, such as volunteering for Good Shepherd Marathon (which included a bit of a hike) and hotpot dinner. On my last day, she organised a mock graduation ceremony for me as a farewell and a dim sum dinner with some teachers, the principal, and my co-intern after school.

Some challenges I faced and how I dealt with them...

I had no teaching background, so I had to learn how to effectively teach and connect with the students while on the spot! And it was a great learning experience.  Being a blank slate in teaching, I asked my supervisor (who is a teacher there) and my co-intern, who studies Education, for advice. They helped me overcome this challenge. I was told to take things slowly and to not be too hard on myself when I don’t see any progress because these things take time. I also learnt a lot from observing and imitating how they interact with the students in and out of the classroom.

A little about my accommodation...

I lived 2 minutes walking distance from my study exchange dorm. The current accommodation was a hotel apartment which I shared with one roommate. The best part of this place? The balcony! It connected us to another room, where two others CIEE interns were staying. In the morning, my roommate and I open our balcony door to let the air in and all you can hear are the honking of cars – something you get used to after 5 months in Hong Kong.

A little about how I funded my experience...

New Colombo Mobility Plan and Discover Your Potential scholarship helped me fund my internship.

My advice to you would be...

If you’re considering an internship, choose the ones that go for more than a month or you won’t get to explore and enjoy everything the country has to offer!
