Nerys's Exchange to Binghamton University | USA
I studied at Binghamton University in New York State, USA. Studying abroad was one of the best experiences of my life and I will remember it forever. The first day getting off the plane trip from Perth to New York City was one of the most incredible feelings. I thought ‘I know no one in this country, or even or what is north’ yet I wasn’t scared, I was excited. During that first week I discovered New York City by going to Broadway shows, walking for miles, getting on and off buses, shopping, and eating.
After the first week, I got on a 3-hour bus heading to Binghamton through the beautiful landscape of New York state. It was all rolling hills covered is the stunning shades of green, American woodland. I finally arrived at Binghamton, it was a beautiful university and a small little town. When I was there I saw summer, autumn and winter, watching the landscape change through the seasons was beautiful, and walking through the snow and trees to class every morning from the Hillside apartments was gorgeous.
Through the semester abroad all of the highlights were definitely the people I met and the amazing times we had together travelling over weekends to Niagara Falls, New York City, Syracuse, and Boston. They are all friends for life and I still talk to some of them almost every day, we have a group chat where we send selfies of exciting things that have happened for us all each month. As our exchange group was very close we went through many experiences together, this helped each of us develop a lot from the first week there to the last week together which was extremely emotional. Being so far from home for so long was scary at times but everything seemed so much easier and even the larger problems seems so straight forward compared to if the same thing were to happen back home. It is for sure an experience I will never forget and has change the way I think about myself and my environment in such a positive way.
