Laura's Exchange to University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire | USA
When I first started my degree at Murdoch University I would have never thought of myself as the type of student who would go on student exchange on the other side of the world. I was in my second year of university and I happened to have a class with an American exchange student from Texas. We got to chatting one day and by the end of the semester we were practically sisters, as we had become such good friends! When she had to leave it was very sad, so we both decided that I should go on exchange somewhere in America, which would allow us to see each other again.
I looked into all the places that Murdoch had partner universities and I decided that the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire was the best fit for me. I had many things at home that I found made me doubt myself after I was approved of going. The whole process of organizing exchange can be very frustrating at times and makes you wonder if it is worth going… I had many times were I was going to pull out because I felt like it was getting too much! However after all the stress and doubt I am so thankful to myself that I didn’t pull out and plucked up the courage to keep going.
Going on exchange was the most rewarding, exciting and not the least bit regrettable experience I have had so far in my life. It was the best semester I have had during my university degree. I loved the American university system, from the classes to the dorms. I made the absolute best friends who helped top my experience! The University offers so many things that aren’t offered at home such as meal plans, many organized events such as the Viennese Ball and overall a fantastic way of learning not only academically but about yourself.
I would not change this experience for anything, I learnt so many things that I don’t think I could of if I had just stayed at home. I am now looking at doing my Masters overseas because I loved my time away so much.
Most people want to go to larger states or more famous ones such as New York or California, however for anyone looking for a beautiful underrated state go to Wisconsin! There are many things in Wisconsin that you won’t find anywhere else for example cheese heads!!! I hope I have helped convinced others to go on exchange, I promise you won’t regret it!!
