Study abroad is an incredible opportunity available to student of all disciplines at Murdoch University who are interested in studying new things in a different environment, travelling, meeting new people and creating wonderful memories. I spent the year studying abroad at the University of East Anglia (UEA) between 2013-2014.

I was first drawn to studying at the UEA because of the broad spectrum of international law units it has to offer. At the UEA I had the opportunity to study areas of law such European Union Law, International Human Rights Law and International Humanitarian and Refugee Law. As part of the pro bono program I volunteered with the Red Cross Project, a collaborative project between the law school and the British Red Cross. The project involved teaching students and community groups about issues within International Humanitarian Law. In order to participate in the program I undertook training with the British Red Cross, which helped me broaden my skills, and has since made a positive contribution to further volunteering and work opportunities. Studying abroad at the UEA helped to shape my future career aspirations.

Living in the UK made travel within Europe both easy and affordable. There were ample opportunities to travel with the UEA and plenty of weekends free from classes to travel with my friends. As a member of the UEA Snow Society I went to the French Alps on a snowboarding trip with 200 other students. With the UEA Law Society I spent the weekend in Paris. As the UEA is only 190km from London weekend trips were common and inexpensive- Mega Bus tickets starting at approximately $2 if you got in early enough.

My fondest memory of my time abroad at the UEA is of the wonderful friends I made. When I arrived at UEA I found myself bundled in with 9 other housemates who I grew to love, even when they didn’t do their dishes for days on end! The friendships I made during that year are still strong; while I miss my friends dearly, we often Skype and are encouraged to travel to each other’s homes to meet up in the future.

I can truly say my year at UEA was unforgettableNot only did I have the opportunity to study unique areas of law that have helped me gain insight into my future career perspectives, I made beautiful friends and embarked on exciting adventures throughout Europe.

Thank you Jeannette, Murdoch and UEA!
