Blake's Exchange to CEU San Pablo | Spain
My
name is Blake Marxsen and I am a determined, forward-thinking and full-time
Environmental Engineering Student at Murdoch University who went to Spain,
Madrid for a study exchange experience. My work, current results and experience
in the un-/related industries of Engineering have let me utilise my communication,
strategic and analytical skills to focus my team to achieve goals in the most
economical and sustainable way.
Studying Architecture in Spain and working as
the Engineer for the Sustainable Restaurant Project has demonstrated my ability
to adapt myself to any situation. Diversity of thought and incorporating
my-self in an Architectural project has enabled me to gain another perspective
on my career. While my concerns were mainly focused on the Environment, Renewability Safety and the installations of the building I
also had consider how these aspects aesthetically influence the project,
something somewhat foreign to the typical Engineer. Here I had to adapt my
skills acquired from Engineering to a more subjective task and this is where as
a team integrity and trust had to be employed. The Architects I was working
with have never worked with Engineer before and so the trust between each of
our “occupations” meant great importance and this enviably is
what made us achieve.
The
experienced in Spain has further depicted how important communication is to
achieving goals as a team, especially when a variety of views is brought to the
table. As an Environmentalist it is sometimes hard to influence importance in
some of our beliefs which can somewhat contrast those presented in industries
today. Sometimes it is viewed as inefficient or expensive to employ these
actions although with communication, trust, partnership and integrity; success will be
achieved.
Currently, I am the Sustainability
intern for infrastructure projects for the City of Fremantle here and currently
doing energy and water audits for the city. Without the experience learnt in Spain,
I wouldn’t be where I am today. I highly encourage anyone who is contemplating
the study exchange experience to do so as it will not only lay the open all
doors, path the way for success but build you as a person.
