Daniela's Guide for the University of Applied Science's Munich | Germany

WHO AM I?

My name is Daniela and I live near Munich (Germany). I study at Munich University of Applied Sciences and I am studying Tourism Management! I studied abroad at Murdoch University and the best part of my exchange was deffiently getting to know so many amazing people in that short period of time. Furthermore I absolutely loved my day trip to Rottnest Island!

THE BEST THINGS ABOUT GERMANY/BAVARIA IS

1. Landscape (Mountains are nearby, beautiful lakes)
2. Beer
3. Food
4. Culture and Traditions (Castles, Oktoberfest and other beer festivities )

5. Free university

THE BEST THINGS ABOUT MUNICH UNIVERSITY OF APPLIED SCIENCES IS

1. As it is a university of applied sciences we have a practical semester where we have to do a one semester  internship during our studies
2. A lot of the professors from the tourism school have worked in the field before and know what is important in real work live
3. Most of the times the grade just consists out of one multiple choice exam at the end of the year (At least in the tourism units I had so far)
4. Besides a very small registration fee each semester the education is free

MY FAVOURITES PLACES TO EAT/GO OUT

There are a lot of things to do in Munich. Munich University is quite central and it is nice to go to the Englischer Garten (English Garden) after class and watch the Surfers at the Eisbach. -I don´t eat out in Munich very often but in summers you should go to a Biergarten and eat something typical Bavarian from the menu. Otherwise there is a fancy Bavarian tapas bar called Bapas that make Bavarian tapas. Here are some other things you have to do!

  • Visiting Marienplatz and the main pedestrian zone
  • Try German beer and pretzels and other traditional food
  • Visit the Hofbräuhaus
  • Go to a Christmas market in winter
  • Try on the traditional cloth (Dirndl / Lederhosen)
  • Go hiking in the mountains
  • Visit the castle Neuschwanstein
  • Visit Starnberger See or Ciemsee
  • Probably go to Oktoberfest or Frühlinsfest in spring
  • If you are curious step by at the Verrückte Eismacher and try fancy ice cream flavours like beer
  • Visit the Olympia Park ( from 1972 Olympic games), there are some nice festivals in summer
  • Visit Allianz Arena (if you are a soccer or FC Bayern München fan)
  • Make a day trip to Salzburg (Austria)
  • Go to a Biergarten (Beergarden) in summer
  • Go skying or ice skating in winter

MY FINAL ADVICE FOR YOU

Make sure you don’t forget to pack… -

  •  A thick jacket, gloves and a hat in winter (it can sometimes sill be very cold until end of February or March)
  • Universal plug. Otherwise you can't charge anything
  • Change some Dollars to Euros. A lot of people pay cash and it is quite common that you cant pay with card it the amount is under 10 Euros
Enjoy ! Have fun and travel as much as possible as everything in Europe is quite close compared to Australia!
