Ruby's Exchange to Richmond, the American University in London | England

London

Ever since I visited London as a child, I’ve wanted to live there. So when I saw that London was an available location through Richmond the American International University, I decided it was a sign that I should apply for Murdoch’s study abroad program. Richmond has two campuses in London, one for first and second year that is located in Richmond, and the Kensington campus that I stayed at, which caters to third and fourth years. The Kensington campus is in an amazing location, about 10 minutes’ walk from Hyde Park and Kensington Palace, and only a few tube stops away from central London.

London

Although my major is English and Creative Writing, Richmond doesn’t have an equivalent English major, so I chose three history classes and one literature class that was offered as an elective. I found my content to be extremely engaging, it was all really unique content and not typical subjects that I would study at Murdoch. There was a London history unit which I highly recommend as every second class was an excursion into the city, which meant I was able to see a lot of famous London icons during class time, and also learn a lot about the areas we visited.

I stayed in the off-campus accommodation that was offered by Richmond, which was about a ten-minute walk from the Kensington campus and across the road from Earl’s Court tube station, so it was located very close to the school and with good overall access to the rest of the city. The building had a number of other Richmond students living there so it was really easy to catch up with classmates and friends to study and socialise. I always felt like I had someone to talk to and some of my best memories are from the parties’ my friends threw in their flats.

A visit to The Netherlands

A large number of students studying at Richmond are either international or exchange students, so it was very easy to make friends and find people to hang out with when I wasn’t in class. London is also a great spot for international travel as it’s so well-connected to airports and trainlines and I definitely recommend doing as much travel as possible before/during/and after studies!

Visit to Lisbon, Portugal

Overall, I would definitely recommend study abroad, it was an amazing experience in an incredible location. London is so incredibly diverse and like nowhere else on the planet and I really think it has something for everyone. Richmond’s Kensington campus is in a really amazing location that would typically be so far outside of my budget so I’m really glad I got the chance to experience it as a student!

It was really great to be able to experience a city that I’ve always dreamed of living in and make so many new friends from all over the world.
