Brent's Exchange to Uppsala University | Sweden
The first question everyone has asked me since arriving back in Australia after spending the past 5 months studying at Uppsala University in Sweden has been the routine conversation starter; "So, how was it?" They probably expected a polite response like, "Yeah it was good." But my experiences abroad were anything but routine. I always answer with, "It was the best thing I've ever done!"
Sweden is an incredible country. It's like a society fast-forwarded 10 years but with all the charming historical attractions you come to expect from the best of Europe. The Swedish scenery is beautiful, both in summer and winter, and I found the winter a welcome change from another Perth summer. The bonus of Europe is the opportunity to visit other countries. I visited 12 countries while on exchange by plane, train and even cruise ship.
Uppsala is the best place in the world for students. The town revolves around the university (established in 1477) where the students thrive.
Hundreds of students from around the world come every semester and the lively student life means you have the chance to meet all of them.
This is in addition to the locals who are always polite and are, in my opinion, the best English speakers outside of native English speaking countries. If you're worried about language issues, you can relax.
I love this quote by Mark Twain: “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do.' So if you're still 'umming' and 'erring' about exchange or Uppsala, just go for it! Trust me, it will be the best thing you ever do.
